Trip Update

Ok so I purchased our tickets yesterday on SWA, they released our dates in the fall. I jumped on it and purchased our tickets. I made 2 mistakes with regards to our plane tickets, although both were fixed. First, I learned that you may only use 4 different payment methods to make a purchase, so 4 gift certificates, but not 4 gift certificates and a credit card. This caused a slight panic at first, because my $250 in gift cards didn't cover our tickets and I had to use our credit card for $28. In order to use it, I had to "remove" one of my gift cards, I called SWA and they actually were unhelpful. However, our conversation gave me a great idea, I just purchased our tickets separately. I was able to purchase my ticket with 3 gift cards and peter's ticket with the remaining gift card balances and the credit card. Since we were purchasing 2 tickets, that was an easy solution, I could have also purchased each way separately since the ticket price didn't change when buying it that way. I NOW KNOW to purchase only $100 gift cards and not to mess around with the $50 ones.

So I purchased our tickets $278 total- $250 gift cards = $28 on our credit card (this is how much I budgeted for our trip).

Second lesson... CHECK DING!!! Since the dates were just released, there was a DING special for 15% off the fall fares. So I could have avoided using my credit card entirely! I was able to "fix it" by cancelling our original reservations and rebooking using the coupon code. However, there are no refunds, so we ended up with ~$36 in SWA credit on our original tickets. So bummer that I could have saved cash on this trip and had cheaper tickets, but at least I still "HAVE" those funds to use on our next trip.

Ok. New update, $50 to add to our total. I have sold some Huggies Swimmers on Craigslist. We are now over halfway towards our goal!

$250 in SWA gift cards
$410 cash
$100 Disney rewards
Total $760

Coupon Lingo

I saw a movie last night with one of my closest friends (a non couponer),
Hi Lee :)
Lee said she needed me to sit down and explain coupon things to her because she doesn't know all the coupon terms. So I thought I would explain a few things on the blog to help out other people too.

CVS- ECB
Extra care buck program. Buy certain items, get a coupon after you purchase it for $ off you next purchase (of anything at CVS). Sometimes these are Free after ECB, meaning you buy something for 6.99 and get a 6.99 ECB (coupon on end of receipt) if you combine this deal with manufacturer's coupons, then you are sort of making money. Buy soap at 6.99 - 1.00 coupon= 5.99, earn 6.99 in ECBS. There are ample opportunities to "make money" at CVS
Walgreens- RR
Walgreens has register rewards, similar to ECBS. Basically they advertise that if X things, you get a coupon for $x.xx good on your next purchase. You can again use manufacturer's coupons here to "make money" on certain deals.

I prefer CVS deals, there seems to be more opportunities for Overage (making money), but I do frequent walgreens for great deals as well.

In addition walgreens has a rebate program and recently started allowing AZ residents to submit the rebates online. This is nice because you don't have to remember to fill out the form and send in the receipts. Nor do you have to pay to mail it or worry about the Post Office losing it.

Both RR and ECB's have expiration dates. So while they are like cash to spend in the store, there is a shelf life on the coupons and it sucks when they expire. :(

A few more general terms
BOGO= Buy one get one free
BOGO 50%= Buy one get one 50% off.
WAG= walgreens coupon (any store coupons can generally be combined with manufacturer's coupon for a better deal, like Target, and CVS coupons)
MFC= manufacturer's coupons

Also I get a couple sets of coupon inserts each sunday, one from my paper and one from my parents and in laws. I find the best system to just cut out coupons I KNOW I will use and keep them with me, however, I file my coupon inserts by date and when I need to find a coupon, I just go to my file cabinet.

I hope this post helps some coupon newbies understand my blogs better. Please comment with addition questions/terms that I should explain better.

Walgreens Totals

>> April 12, 2008

Ok. So I hit up a few walgreens yesterday, to pick up some Rx essentials for overage and use the $5/20 coupon. I had only one bad experience which I will talk about at the end.

I will just list my Walgreens summary from yesterday
4 Walgreen Brand Formula 25 oz cans- used 7 day coupon making it $12.00 each
12 Nature Made Rx Essentials Diabetes - 5.00 coupons- 2.00 WAG coupons
8 Aveeno Lotions - 1.50/2 coupons (on some not all)
1 Soy joy bar (for rebate)
1 polident for gc promo
Total $12.70 ($10 on a walgreens gift card) so $2.70 cash

Earned $20 in Register Rewards
Not bad for a month's worth of formula, much less another $20 in Register Rewards, more nature made points for coupons and $12 in rebate $ from caregivers.

I tried to go to one last store last night, a store had an issue with a few weeks ago combining a manufacturer's coupon with a walgreen coupon that resulted in overage. Unfortunately for me, they had at least 6 of the Rx Essentials Vitamins, but the same "stupid" cashier was working. I didn't even attempt to use 6 of the Vitamin coupons, only 3 since I figured she would have an issue with that. However, she had issues with the 2.00 + 5.00 coupon creating overage, since the vitamins were 6.19. She wouldn't adjust the coupons down. When she called the AM about it , The AM didn't even address her concern. Instead she comes over and after reading the coupons comes up with the idiot/dreaded " one per purchase" argument. Basically stating that I could only use one coupon, even thought I was "purchasing 6 of the product". I tried to explain the difference between transaction and purchase, but she didn't think there was a difference. I hate reasoning with cashiers about this, I couldn't believe I was having this discussion with a "Manager." Anyway, so I left my purchase at the register and unfortunately it was right before closing, so I couldn't even make it to another store in time for one last order.

Oh well, I emailed Walgreens explaining the incident and a previous one that I had let go, basically same cashier with the same issue of combining a walgreens and manufacturer's coupons that results in overage. Most cashiers will not care, or at least price adjust the coupon down, but she was unwilling to do that for me. Anyway, I just need to avoid that walgreens and hopefully get a clear coupon policy from corporate to carry with me.

MIA :)

>> April 07, 2008

My dad has been in town for the past week, so while I have shopped for a few deals, I have been busy hanging out with him often, so I haven't posted much.

Anyway, last week I managed to do the softsoap and EOB deals at CVS. I haven't come up with a plan yet for this week, but it will involve diapers. I am just not sure if I should buy size 5 diapers or not. My BIG little guy is 6 1/2 months and already in size 4's. I had to exchange about 15 size 3 packs a month ago. I hope to avoid that process again.

Anyway,
I did manage to hit Frys and Walgreens today.
